The Enzyme Histochemical and Electron Microscopic Studies on the Liver and Kidney in Acute and Chronic Malathion-Poisoned Rats

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the toxic effect of malathion on the liver and kidney in rats.
Two groups of animals, acute and chronic poisoned, were administered with malathion at the dose of 100ag/100y B. W. for 3 days and 10zg/1008 B. W. for 30 days respectively. The animals were then sacrified on the following day after last treatment, and enzyme histochemical and electron microscopic studies were carried out.
The results obtained were as follows.
1. In both acute and chronic poisoning, mild degenerative changes of hepatocytes in periportal area and minimal chronic inflammatory cells infiltrates in portal area. But there was no histological changes in the kidney.
2. The activity of acid phosphatase increased mildly in the liver of both acute and chronic poisoning, whereas that of nonspecific esterase and SDH decreased mildly only in the liver of acute poisoning.
3. In electron microscopic observations, no significant fine structural changes were noted in hepatocytes, except for numerous fat droplets and decreased amount of glycogen, and in tubular epitheliail cells.
